Foraminoplasty

What Is Foraminoplasty?

Foraminoplasty is a surgical procedure used to relieve pressure on spinal nerves by widening the openings through which they exit the spine. These openings, called neural foramina, are located between the vertebrae and allow nerves to travel from the spinal cord to other parts of the body.

When a neural foramen becomes narrowed, a condition known as foraminal stenosis, it can compress or irritate nearby nerve roots. Foraminoplasty removes the bone or tissue causing the narrowing to create more space for the affected nerve.

The procedure may be performed using minimally invasive techniques, including endoscopic foraminoplasty, which uses a small incision and specialized instruments to access the affected area.

What Causes Foraminal Stenosis?

Foraminal stenosis develops when changes in the spine reduce the space available for nerves to exit the spinal canal. Common causes include:

  • Bone spurs that develop along the vertebrae
  • Herniated or bulging discs
  • Arthritis and age-related spinal degeneration
  • Thickening of the spinal ligaments
  • Enlargement of the facet joints
  • Scar tissue or other changes that contribute to nerve compression

These conditions can place pressure on the spinal nerve roots, leading to pain and other neurological symptoms.

What Are the Symptoms of Foraminal Stenosis?

Symptoms vary depending on the location and severity of nerve compression. Foraminal stenosis may affect the neck or lower back, with symptoms extending into other areas of the body.

Common symptoms include:

  • Neck or back pain
  • Pain that radiates into the shoulders, arms, hands, buttocks, legs, or feet
  • Numbness or tingling in the affected areas
  • Muscle weakness
  • Muscle spasms or cramping
  • Difficulty performing certain movements or everyday activities

Symptoms may become more noticeable with certain positions or activities that place additional pressure on the affected nerves.
