OLIF: Oblique Lumbar Interbody Fusion For L2-L5
Oblique lumbar interbody fusion or OLIF is a new minimally invasive spine procedure performed through a small opening in the side of the patient to correct lumbar spinal problems caused by a degenerated disc. This procedure creates more space for the nerves by removing damaged intervertebral disc and bone and then, fusing two adjacent spinal vertebrae.

OLIF Advantage:
One of the main advantages of Oblique Lateral Interbody Fusion is its a lateral approach compared to traditional spinal fusion techniques. The OLIF lateral approach spares the disruption of major back muscles, ligaments and bones, while preserving back strength. This procedure is recommended to treat:

OLIF Surgical procedure
OLIF is performed under general anesthesia. The patient is positioned lying on the side. The surgeon finds the damaged disc with fluoroscope guidance and makes a tony opening in the skin. Then a series of tubes called “dilators” are passed through the soft tissues and down to the disc. The surgeon then slid a device called “retractor” over the dilators, and they are removed.
The damaged disc is carefully removed and an implant called “interbody device” is placed between the vertebrae and packed with bone graft. The interbody device lifts your vertebrae into the proper position. It relieves compression of nearby nerves.
Finally, the spine is stabilized with other supports. Rods, plates, screws or other devices are chosen based on the needs of the patient. Over time, a solid fusion will form between the vertebrae.
