Anxiety is a completely normal response to stress. Stress is a completely natural response to situations that we find difficult to handle or understand.  However, while it is normal to have certain fears, if they are not managed properly, they can cause adverse physical and mental effects in us.  Many experience apprehension on “going under the knife”, but could we do something to lessen or even alleviate our fearful feelings? We have 3 suggestions to be considered when experiencing anxiety before your surgery day.

Get the facts

Speak frankly to your surgical team about your fears or anxieties. They, in turn, will offer information that will likely answer your concerns or debunk any inaccurate ideas you may have had. It is normal to be overwhelmed, but getting the facts about your particular surgery case will help you will better. To help you keep a clear mind, write down any questions before speaking to your doctor so that you can make sure to get all your answers. You will certainly feel more comfortable with the process.

Understand what happens after surgery

It’s easy to get caught up with all the surgical details and even what may or may not go wrong. While those concerns are certainly valid, there is still more to encounter after the procedure has passed. Educate yourself about what your post-op experience could be. By knowing the process of recovery, the surgical procedure itself may not be so daunting after all. Also, preparing for the recovery will take your mind off the surgery and you’ll be glad returning to a home that is recovery-ready.

Try guided meditation strategies

Meditation is a means of transforming the mind. These are techniques that encourage and develop concentration, clarity, emotional positivism, and a calm seeing of the true nature of things. By engaging with a particular meditation practice, you will learn the patterns and habits of your mind. Meditation reduces stress, increases self-awareness, and benefits cardiovascular and immune health. Before trying any medications or medical treatments for allaying anxiety, consult your doctor. You wouldn’t want to do anything that would interfere with your care on the day of your surgery.
